The Liftmaster door opener line of battery backup units are now coming to the age of service. These units have required little to no maintenance over the last several years which is really a good thing. We have begun to receive calls that are battery-oriented and wanted to pass along some FYI to our customers and at large as well. If you have begun to hear a familiar repeat beep in your garage that sounds a little bit like a smoke detector, but you know it is not the smoke detector, then more than likely if you have a Battery backup door opener installed, it is probably time to install a new battery. This beeping noise is spaced about 20 minutes or so apart and can become really annoying. This information will greatly help you.
First thing to do is get a ladder if needed and a 1/4″ nut driver tool to remove the battery cover. The battery is located on the right side of the door opener power head mounted in the ceiling, as you stand under it looking out towards the driveway, inside the lens cover behind the light bulb, when you pull down the light cover and remove the light bulb, you will see the compartment door as it has the 1/4″ screw. Unplug the door opener, remove the screw and compartment door. The battery has two connector wires to it, one is red and the other is black. Disconnect the wires and remove the battery. The battery is not needed to open or close the door when the unit is plugged into electrical outlet. The battery is used as a back-up and therefore came the name “battery backup”. These batteries are available from Interstate battery or other battery warehouses, even included is the Sears Diehard. The battery cost will be somewhere between $25-$43 US dollars depending on the retailer. To remove the dead battery, simply push the two wire back into the unit and reinstall the compartment screw, plug the unit back in and resume regular operation. The unit will not make the annoying noise while the battery is removed.
Here is the test. If you have not used the battery over the time span that you owned the door opener, chances are that you never will and therefore do not need to install a new battery. In some areas this is a must have option due to the electrical grid problems where power loss is a common everyday thing. These batteries are sealed and cannot be repaired.
