Garage Door Safety Check List

Did you know that a garage door is the largest moving object in most homes, poses safety concerns to you and your family and that garage door manufacturers strongly suggest that you should have your garage door serviced once every 3 years?  The garage door opener must also be properly adjusted and maintained for safe operation.

The following is a safety checklist that we at Worcester Door Company recommend you execute on a regular basis to ensure that your garage door is maintained and to also help you identify and address any problems or potential problems and injuries.

Safety Checklist:

1.  Inspect the garage door :  Look at the garage door hinges, cables, rollers, springs, pulleys, and all other door hardware for any signs of wear.  Check the tracks for dents or if they are misaligned.  Whether minor or extensive, we recommend you have a qualified person inspect and make the necessary repairs.

2.  Conduct a monthly test on the garage door reversing mechanism:  The Door should reverse, if an object obstructs the door as it is closing. Make sure the garage door opener is equipped with such reversing features. If the door does not reverse, have it inspected, repaired or replaced by a qualified person.

3.  Conduct a monthly test on the garage door balance:  With the door in the closed position and the operator disconnected, lift the door manually. It should lift smoothly and with little resistance and should remain open. If the garage door is out of balance, have the door system adjusted by a person qualified to make adjustments.

4.  Conduct a monthly test on the force setting on the garage door:  Hold up the bottom of the door as it closes. If the door does not easily reverse, the force is excessive and needs adjustment by a qualified technician.

5.  Avoid a moving garage door and keep hands and fingers clear of the garage door:  Do not stand, walk or run under a moving door. Hands and fingers must be kept clear from section joints, hinges, track, springs and other door parts.

6.  Do not let children play with transmitters or remote controls of garage door: Garage door operators are not toys. Keep them out of reach of children. Push button wall controls must be mounted high enough to be out of the reach of children.

7.  Only operate the garage door if you can see it:  Keep the door in sight until it closes completely.

Keep in mind that safety comes first and we at Worcester Door Company strongly believe and recommend preventative maintenance.
